TPS Group Artwork for ‘Afloat’

Group: Thornton PS Stage 2

Throughout the process of Shadow Judging, TPS Stage 2 HPGE kids decided they would like to make an artwork based on the book Afloat. We were introduced to some inspirational ,contemporary local Indigenous artworks on display at the University of Newcastle and they settled on leaf painting. We went on a big bush walk leaf collecting expedition on our beautiful school grounds. With the collected leaves, we spent the next few weeks painting them with colours and patterns found in the end papers of the book. After printing out the whale and cutting it, we stuck it on some sheets of black cardboard. The leaves were then glued on one at a time until we used every leaf!

Our process for the project was almost a parallel of the narrative in the sense that we came together regularly to paint, create and talk together about literature.

Well done TPS HPGE Shadow Judging Group! So proud 🙂
