Our Winner: Student responses:
- Loved the voice of Layla and being able to walk in her skin for a while. Smart, funny and very real, the writing was very authentic and personal and believable. Some situations were very painful and confronting and quite graphic, which was at times uncomfortable, but seemed to add even more importance to topics. LM
- This book is a must-read for older readers and teachers. It makes you think and understand what it’s like to be in Layla’s world. It explains why things that may seem harmless are in fact not harmless, and it’s very authentic. I loved the writing, and I loved how it made you think and understand what it’s like to live in this world when Aboriginal. PD
- Amazing, and very insightful into the life of an Aboriginal girl. LB
- I found this book a bit mature for my taste, but I really enjoyed hearing from Layla’s POV.
- The Skin I’m in is very well written and displayed the problems that Aboriginal people faced very well, along with relationships and teenage struggles.GB
