2023 CBCA Picture Book of the Year description

Grace and Mr Milligan

Year 1 and 2 students (while not shadow judging) were practicing exploring the themes and illustrations in ‘Grace and Mr Milligan’. We loved making our own picnic to cheer up a friend. Our work was made using plasticine for the fruit, watercolour picnic rugs, and paperclay cream (Zart inspired book week activity).

Scar Town

Our Year 5 and 6 students created their own Scar Town drawings of the house appearing out of the lake. While not participating in Shadow Judging we loved seeing what the Year 3 & 4 shadow judges chose as the winner – and making our own creative response.

Book Readings

Staff volunteered to do book Readings for each of the notables which were then broadcast to students during Homeroom in the mornings. Based on their interpretations, students completed a google form and weighed in on the vote.

Paper Folding

Our Book Club listened to the story and discussed the interesting language and incredible illustrations. We re-listened top the tale as we explored our cutting and folding skills to create paper flowers.

Time to Talk

Our Book Club was lucky to have a session with a local literary expert, Sarah Mayor Cox to discuss all the Shortlisted Picture Books. We had a great laugh about the puns and idioms which filled the book ‘Timeless’.
