We chose ‘These Long Loved Things’ as our winner for Picture Book of the Year because it effectively showed the thoughts of someone who lost a loved on due to Alzeimer’s Disease. The text is reflective while the illustrations show how the family are spending their last moments together surrounded by loved activities and places. There was a lot of symbolism used throughout the book through colours, the motif of the leaves representing memories blowing away and shadows changing.
We wrote short letters, messages to and memories of loved ones on leaves to respond to the text.
