We all enjoyed the story of “How to Move a Zoo” and how Jessie and Mr Miller had such a good relationship. It looked like Mr Miller showed a lot of patience and care to make sure Jessie moved to the new Taronga Zoo successfully. We wondered how they would move elephants these days so we decided to visit Werribee Zoo to see how the elephants from Melbourne Zoo travelled to their new home earlier this year. There is a wonderful YouTube video of the journey called “Trail of the Elephants” which shows you how it was done and the care the keepers took of the elephants during the transition. We spoke to the keepers at the Werribee Zoo and were amazed to find it took a whole year of practice to get the elephants to walk into the specially designed and air conditioned crates to go to their new home. We wondered what the people driving their cars over the West Gate Bridge would have thought if they knew an elephant was travelling on a truck right beside them! The zoo keepers at Werribee are excited about how happy the herd of 9 Asian elephants are in their 21 hectare home with a new pool and a night enclosure if they choose to use it. We met Met Kapah who is 52 years old and Roi-Yim who is 3 years old.
