In response to Two Can Play That Game the Loreto College Shadow Judges held their own Video Game Competition!
The students spent time researching games that would be appropriate for a video game competition to be held during Book Week. The game needed to be free and easily accessible from student laptops (not blocked by the school’s firewall), be short enough that it could be played in one lunchtime and have a clear scoring system. The shortlisted games were Fireboy and Watergirl, Pacman and Tetris. A practice session was held and after some testing the students unanimously decided that Fireboy and Watergirl was the best game for the job. After this they set about deciding on the competition structure and creating advertising.
This event was held as part of our Book Week celebrations and was a wonderful way for the Shadowers to share their love of reading with the school community! The gaming/book crossover also meant we had many students attend that were not regular Library users. Students played in teams or solo, while others opted just to spectate and cheer on the brave student who agreed to have their game presented up on the big screen for all to see. Gaming snacks were eaten, prizes were awarded for those able to travel furthest on the game map within the time restrictions, and fun was had by all!
